The Silent Strain: Why neck and back pain are more common than you think
Neck and lower back pain are highly common conditions, affecting people across all age groups and demographics. Back pain, in particular, is the leading cause of disability worldwide, with studies showing that up to 90% of Australians experience back pain at some point in their lives (1). This issue is most prevalent among adults, especially those aged 30-60 and those in physically demanding jobs or sedentary occupations.
Neck pain is becoming increasingly widespread due to the demands of modern life. While injuries such as whiplash or sports-related trauma are common causes, a significant contributing factor is the cumulative strain placed on the neck from poor posture. Activities like sitting at a desk, using phones or devices, and even everyday tasks like reading or caring for children can lead to forward head posture, which stresses the neck and shoulders. When these positions are sustained over time, they can lead to discomfort and injury.
Both neck and back pain can start suddenly, often due to an injury, but they may also develop gradually due to repetitive strain or poor posture. With proper treatment, such as chiropractic care and physiotherapy; healing is possible, and many individuals recover to be pain free and have full function.
Common Symptoms
- Pain: which may be sharp, dull, or aching, typically on the side / base of neck or bandlike across the low back.
- Stiffness: difficulty bending, straightening, rotating or moving the spine often feeling like it’s “locked.”
- Muscle spasms: involuntary muscle contractions that can cause sharp pain or a “knot” feeling.
- Radiating pain: pain that radiates from the neck to the shoulders, arms, or hands.
or from the low back into the legs, buttocks or feet. - Weakness/numbness: loss of muscle strength and tingling in the arms or legs.
- Pain with certain movements or positions: such as rotating the head to the side, bending,
sitting or standing for prolonged periods.

Our Approach
During your initial appointment, we’ll take a detailed health history, perform a thorough musculoskeletal and neurological exam, capture posture photos, and, if necessary, refer you for spinal x-rays. With this comprehensive information, we’ll meet at your second visit – the Report of Findings, to discuss your results and create a personalised care plan tailored to your goals and lifestyle. We provide realistic timeframes for healing, based on your unique needs.
We value transparency—if we can’t help with your specific issue, we’ll let you know and refer you to someone better suited if possible. Our care plans are individualised and centered around you. If this approach resonates with you, book your Initial Consultation today, and let’s get started.
