Postural Correction

Struggling with Poor Posture?

Every time you look in the mirror you notice one shoulder is higher than the other. You might also notice the crinkles in your shirt around your shoulders as your shoulders round and drop in. People always tell you to ‘straighten up’ because you always have your head and neck craning forward, but you feel like it is impossible to pull and hold it back, even using your back muscles.

Has anyone ever told you that the problem could be structural? That the neck hump and headaches might actually be remedied with some structural body work? Postural correction is the cornerstone of what we aim to do, here – your case will be in the right hands.

Understanding Posture

Modern device usage, combined with desk jobs and long hours of driving, has led to a significant increase in postural issues, shifting our spines from a neutral, upright position to a collapsed forward posture. In the upper body, this often results in a forward head, rounded shoulders, and a curved upper back. This pattern places excessive strain on the base of the neck, contributing to premature degeneration and potentially interfering with nerves that extend into the arms, leading to numbness and tingling in the shoulders, arms, and hands.

In the lower body, poor posture typically causes an anteriorly tilted pelvis, increasing the inward curve of the lower back (lordosis). This places added stress on the facet joints and discs of the lower back, leading to early degeneration, potential lumbar disc bulges, nerve compression, and hamstring tightness. Over time, sciatic pain may radiate into the glutes and legs as a result of prolonged poor posture.

What is ideal posture?

Ideal posture refers to the relative alignment of your spinal column to the straight gravity line that runs from your ear, to shoulder, through the centre of the pelvis, knee and foot. This is when your body stands upright with the best balance and requires as little effort as possible.

Common Symptoms

  • Rounded shoulders
  • Jutted out neck and chin
  • Tight upper trap and suboccipital muscles
  • A rounded, hunched upper back
  • Rotated torso or a dip in one of your shoulders
  • A forward rolled pelvis with tight hamstrings

Our Approach

Our approach to postural correction is comprehensive. To get a good understanding of your body, we will take an in-depth health history, complete a full musculoskeletal and neurological exam, take baseline posture photos and refer out for erect spinal x-rays (where indicated).

Having gathered all of this data, we can sit down at the Report of Findings and map out a care plan based on your goals for your body, giving you realistic timeframes for potential correction. During the care plan we deliver specific postural adjustments primarily via the unique ABCTM (Advanced Biostructural Correction)(1) method which targets forward vertebrae, getting you standing and breathing with ease.

During care, we will also advise on crucial postural support ergonomics, namely; mattress, pillow and desk/car setups. Exercises are also a focus at certain stages of postural correction. If you or a loved one feel like it’s time to say goodbye to slumped posture, please book an Initial Consultation today.
